Finse 1222

Finse 1222 has always been tougher than the train!

Finse is from a different world. It's because of the climate. The mountains. The absence of everything else that you normally surround yourself with. The presence of something that is much bigger. At Finse 1222, you will find much of the same rawness that you will find in the landscape outside the front door. A visit to us will change you. And that’s the whole point, isn’t it?

The 100-year old hotel has survived bombs and grenades, hurricane winds and changing travel and holiday habits. Today, Finse 1222 is a high-quality hotel offering a wide range of fantastic excursions, first-class catering, superb service and a unique historic atmosphere.

Following a number of alterations, the hotel was completely refurbished in 1980 and renamed Finse 1222. The hotel has 43 rooms with a total of 125 beds. The hotel has a fully licensed bar and restaurant, as well as its own bakery which makes fresh bread and Finse rolls every day.

You can only reach Finse by train, bike or on skis. This creates a completely different feeling of being protected from the outside world!

Food

Our kitchen offers both variation and excitement, just like the fantastic surroundings at Finse. Start the day with our generous breakfast buffet with freshly baked Jøkul bread on the table. Prepare your own packed lunch and enjoy it in the great outdoors and then round off the day with a three-course Finse evening meal. The menu is set in advance by our chef. We prepare all our food ourselves using only the best ingredients.

Good food needs good drink. Our wines are handpicked from our supplier Moestue Grape Selection. For larger groups, we can customise events around the food. We can offer lunch in a lavvo (a Sami tent) for example. For parties, you can let our chef put the menu together, either on his own or in consultation with you.

We promise you an unforgettable culinary experience!

Sykkel 1222 – bike hire

The best bikes along Rallarvegen can be hired from Sykkel 1222. Our Merida bikes are high quality, modern and new. Bikes undergo a full service between each cleaning. This involves cleaning the bike, replacing worn parts and tightening or slackening screws as necessary.

Bikes should be booked well in advance and can be collected from our bike shop, which is situated on the platform. All bikes can be returned to either Myrdal or Flam before 12.00pm on the following day. We will arrange for them to be transported back to Finse.

We also hire out bike trailers and bike bags to our bike hire customers. We do not hire out bike helmets for insurance reasons. You can either buy a bike helmet from us or bring your own. In the shop, we also sell bike equipment and clothing and can carry out repairs on your own bike.

Activities and experiences

The summer season at Finse lasts from July through to the end of October. During the summer, you can explore the Hardangerjøkulen glacier, cycle Rallarvegen and experience two of Norway’s most beautiful national parks with an extensive network of marked and unmarked trails. Finse 1222 is situated right in the middle of it all and is the perfect starting point for genuine mountain experiences.

Finse is a winter paradise! Whether you are looking to explore the unspoiled landscape around Finse on cross-country skis, “fly” over the extensive plateau with a ski sail or discover the polar spirit in you from a dog sledge, Finse is the perfect starting point for genuine winter experiences. Weather permitting, Finse Skisenter is also open at weekends. The snow conditions are reliable, with up to 5m of snow during the season from November through to May. Finse is also the southernmost place in Europe with an arctic climate. The average annual temperature is -2oC.

Course programme at Finse

Many companies have realised that Finse 1222 is the place to go to work, celebrate and team-build. We have three meeting rooms: Jøkulsalen, Møteloftet and Peisestuen. We can take groups of up to 125 people. At Finse 1222, you and your employees will find peace and tranquillity amongst the mountains. With a wide range of activities and excellent facilities for courses and conferences, the hotel has had many satisfied and loyal guests over the past hundred years. A visit to the Blåisen glacier at the foot of Hardangerjøkulen after a hard working session is the perfect way to relax. Don't let the views distract you from your work...

Vatnahalsen

If you are looking for an informal environment, a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere and a cosy cabin on your holiday, then Vatnahalsen is an ideal sanctuary amongst the mountains. We offer you comfort but not luxury – spacious living rooms and rooms for dancing, entertainment and indoor activities.

Vatnahalsen Høyfjellshotell has long traditions which extend right back to 1896, when the first hotel was built. The hotel here has been open more or less continually ever since then, but at times it has only been open for part of the year.

The current hotel was built in 1953/54 after the previous hotel was burned down during the war. The hotel was subsequently extended with a “new” wing and conference room around 1970. The hotel currently has a capacity of 40 rooms. Bright and pleasant rooms, most of which are spacious and have a bath/shower and toilet. Adjacent to the hotel is an annex. This building dates from around 1880 and was originally used to provide accommodation during the construction of the Bergen Railway. Since the hotel took over the building, it has been used as accommodation for the staff at Vatnahalsen. After the hotel burned down in the early part of the war, the annex was used as a hostel. This continued through until the new hotel was opened. In recent years, the annex has been refurbished and during the summer we can now offer accommodation here.

Food

Breakfast is served 08.00-10.00. Lunch menu available 13.00-16.00.
Confectionary.
Evening meals are served 19.00.

Activities

Vatnahalsen is a popular stopping-off place on Rallarvegen. It’s good to take a breather here after the demanding uphill stretch from Reinungavatnet and the steep downhill section down the Myrdal hairpin bends. Many people choose to have their lunch here and we recommend that you try the renowned and delicious Vatnahalsen waffles.

Whether you enjoy cross-country skiing or walking, hunting or fishing or simply enjoying beautiful scenery through the camera lens, the choices are endless at Vatnahalsen. You will find both easy and more challenging trips, in both summer and winter.

Courses and conferences

Vatnahalsen Høyfjellshotell can offer your company courses/conferences in a warm and homely atmosphere, 820m above sea level. Get away from the stresses of urban life. You can only reach us by train and in these climate-conscious times, this is one of the most environmentally friendly, not to mention comfortable, ways of travelling. The hotel has a capacity of 35 people in single rooms or 60 people if the participants share a double room.

You can choose between many excursions both along Rallarvegen and down the Flåm Railway. Marked trails to Kaldavasshytta, Tarven and Stonndalen. Paths to Broksnosi, Skjebergsnuten, Ugjerdsdalen to Upsete.

Myrdal Fjellstove

With its wild, beautiful and lush location, Myrdal Fjellstove is situated just 5 minutes from Myrdal railway station half-way between Aurlandsfjord and Hardangerfjord (access via the Bergen and Flåm Railways). Myrdal is the starting point for fantastic natural experiences, whether it be courses/studies or recreation. We have 18 double rooms, shared bathroom/WC and showers. Cosy lounge and dining room. Gym with rowing machines and weights. Open 24 hours a day during the cycling season. During the rest of the year, we are open by arrangement for events such as courses, conferences, anniversaries, etc.

Food

During the cycling season, we serve breakfast and evening meals. In the case of group events, we can put together menus in consultation with the customer. We always try to use local produce wherever possible. Myrdal is fully licensed.

Activities

Spring, summer and autumn: Walk or cycle Rallarvegen. Many superb daytrip options. For example, you could walk to Klevagjeldet, with its fantastic river bed and experience the wide variety of flowers, including the rare Moonwort, orchids, fascinating geology and excellent fishing. Walk to Kaldavass with its wild ”moon landscape” and the chance to see wild reindeer. Walk in the incredibly beautiful Flåmsdalen valley and go on a mini-cruise on Nærøyfjorden. There are many excellent summit walks, varied terrain and delightful waterfalls, not to mention superb fishing and berry-picking.

Winter. Skiing and snowshoe trips. Ice-climbing and avalanche study/courses. The Flåm Railway is highly recommended during the winter. We are striving to become a “knowledge centre” offering a wide variety of courses and lectures. We start the winter with our first course, “Digital stories”, which basically looks at how to edit pictures on a PC/MAC, insert text and create good stories digitally.
